Berg [bûrg, 1983] n. a creative publisher; v.t. to work with (q.v., authors); adj. independent

Berg is an international independent publisher committed to innovative ideas in visual and material culture, including fashion and textiles, cultural/media studies, film, art and design, food, sport and anthropology. We have found that some of the most vibrant intellectual activity is happening at the very edge of more traditional disciplines and we believe in nurturing these creative pockets and bringing their very best research to the attention of the broadest possible readership. Most Berg titles are of interest to people across a range of subject areas, from cultural and media studies to sociology, anthropology, history and human geography. The project of delving deep into emerging areas and ‘spreading the word’ challenges and engages each member of our team here at Berg. We are excited by what we do, and we think it shows.

Our lists in Fashion, Cultural and Media Studies and all aspects of Visual Culture are our most rapidly developing. We are committed to provocative scholarship and pedagogy, and firmly believe in the importance of publishing and promoting work that challenges convention. We are not afraid of interdisciplinary publishing, and you will see this reflected in most of our titles. We offer a range of book products – from textbooks to monographs to reference works – all written to the highest standards and creatively published and marketed. Our journals program has significantly expanded in line with our books and reflects our strengths in sensory studies, which includes, but is not limited to, visual culture.

Independence is important to us. In 2002, we undertook a management buy-out, signalling our desire to remain free from the bureaucracy and indecisiveness that plagues most corporates. Since that time, we have increased the number and range of books and journals we publish, moved offices, added staff, re-branded, and signed agencies throughout the world. We have also greatly expanded our e-publishing activities and have plans for many more (watch this space)!

Even more important than all this activity, however, is our commitment to author care. Ask any author on our list about his or her experience of working with us and we feel certain you will get a glowing report. Our authors mean a lot to us. We believe in quick turnarounds, personalized service and a commitment to each individual book.

If you have any questions or comments about our publishing please contact the appropriate member of our team.
